Neck Pain

Neck pain affects 30% of men and 43% of women at some point in their lives.

Neck pain can result from many factors, including bad posture, uncomfortable sleeping positions, and extended periods of sitting. It can also be the result from an injury, an accident, or extreme exercise amongst other possibilities.

Furthermore it has been linked to other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis, as well as the natural aging process.

Acupuncture For Neck Pain

Studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment for neck pain, In one particular study with over 100 participants the researchers found that acupuncture for neck pain provided improvements in quality of life, active neck mobility and reduced the usage of medication.

When undergoing acupuncture, the practitioner inserts thin needles at specific points along the meridians of your body to improve the flow of "qi" and promote healing. Modern research suggests that the fascia network could be the anatomical basis for acupoints and meridians in the human body (learn more here).

Neck pain can be linked to joint pain, muscle knots, fatigue, stress, and memory loss, among other symptoms. Acupuncture treats the specific area that is causing your neck pain but also aims to address the underlying causes.

Other practices, such as dry cupping are also impactful and can be combined with acupuncture to provide additional relief. Cupping may be used in conjunction with acupuncture for even better results.

In a meta-analysis conducted in 2018, researchers completed a systematic review of cupping as a treatment for neck pain. The results showed that cupping was able to reduce neck pain in patients compared with those who received no intervention. The effects of cupping were also associated with significant improvement in terms of function and quality of life.

What To Expect From Acupuncture For Neck Pain

You can expect to feel relief from the pain you’ve been feeling in your neck, and also from any discomfort you might have in your shoulders or back. Because the acupuncture points for neck pain are often connected with issues like headaches, sinus infections, fatigue, and muscle tension.

During your acupuncture appointment, your practitioner will ask you questions to identify the underlying causes of your neck pain and create a personalized treatment plan for your unique set of symptoms. They may use more than 15+ acupuncture needles on the points corresponding to the pain you are experiencing. The acupuncture needles will be left in place whilst you relax through the process. The needles help to stimulate energy flow, kickstarting your body's healing process. While you may feel a slight pinch or dull ache when the needle is initially inserted, this feeling will subside, and the overall treatment becomes a relaxing and healing experience.

Acupuncture Points For Neck Pain

You might be surprised to learn that many acupuncture points for neck pain are not in your neck! Acupuncture is a holistic treatment, and the points chosen by your practitioner will work to treat the underlying causes of your neck pain. Here are some commonly used acupuncture points for neck pain:

  • Large Intestine 4 (LI4)

LI4 can be found on the skin between your thumb and your forefinger. This analgesic point is often stimulated when treating aches and pains throughout your body.

  • Jian Jing / Gallbladder 21 (GB21)

GB21 can be found between your neck and your shoulder bone. It is particularly useful in treating muscle tension, migraines, and headaches. It can also be used as a point for treating a sore neck.

  • Zhong Zu / San Jiao 3 (SJ3)

Located between your pinky and ring fingers. If your neck or shoulder pain is the result of stress and tension this point will likely be activated. When stimulated, it helps to promote circulation, particularly surrounding your brain, and aids in tension relief.

  • Feng Chi / Gallbladder 20 (GB20)

Located behind the lobe of your ear and toward the base of your skull, this point is used in treating fatigue, headaches, neck pain, and shoulder pain.

  • Luo Zhen

On the back of your hand, between your pointer and middle finger, is the Luo Zhen acupuncture point. The point is on the opposite side of your body to the side you are feeling pain. Stimulation of this point can help to relieve neck soreness.
