What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment. Practitioners insert thin needles, gently apply pressure, and provide warmth to an injured area. The goal is to improve blood circulation and redirect the flow of "qi" to help patients reduce pain and discomfort. Treatments such as Tui Na massage and Cupping may be used in conjunction with acupuncture for better results.
Acupuncture is recognized in over 100+ countries.
3 to 6 million Americans receive acupuncture treatment annually.
Acupuncture For Headaches
A review of 26 clinical trials was published and showed that acupuncture was an effective headache treatment, and should be considered an option for patients suffering from constant headaches, as long as they are willing to undergo this type of treatment.
According to a research paper published in the National Library of Medicine, a randomized controlled trial conducted in Germany involving over 300 participants showed that acupuncture is more effective than no acupuncture.
Another randomized controlled trial with over 700 participants, showed that a treatment plan consisting of 11 acupuncture treatments given within a six-week period was at least as effective as a β-blocker taken daily over a six-month period.
Further research in high-quality trials involving 4419 participants showed that there is consistent evidence to point to the beneficial qualities of acupuncture in the treatment of acute migraine attacks. The research suggests that acupuncture is at least as effective as prophylactic drug treatment and involves fewer adverse effects for patients.
Acupuncture & Tui Na Massage For Headaches
In a separate set of studies, researchers compared a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combination of acupuncture and tuina massage with the oral medication flunarizine hydrochloride. The TCM treatment was significantly more effective than the drug treatment for reducing pain frequency, intensity, and duration due to migraines.
Acupuncture combined with tuina therapy had a total effective rate of 93.8%, whereas the medication group only achieved a 63% total effective rate. Astoundingly, the Acupuncture with Tui Na group had significantly fewer relapses.
